Audience for Black Mirror

 Target Audience for Black Mirror

The target audience for San Junipero is older audiences in San Junipero due to 1980s and 1990s and 2000 who will understand relevant references in the episode. Black Mirror as a whole is targeted at 20-30 maybe at a stretch 40s as it is located on the streaming site of Netflix. Would be more aimed at women who will stereotypically binge watch shows. Male audience due to sci-fi genre

The episode of San Junipero is aimed at women and lesbian couple with a mostly white demographic, and the employment of the episode would be people over 18 and working as you need to pay for it in order to watch stuff.

Audience of women are targeted through main characters in the story being women. Black mirror as a whole attracts to men through the cover image being darker and the whole content being sci fi. However it was released on Netflix meaning it will be more aimed at employed people due to the costs of Netflix.

Reception Theory - Stuart Hall - Producers encode (put in) meaning, audiences decode (take out) meaning. Can be meant in 3 ways

Dominant position - we totally accept what's encoded

Negotiated position - audiences accept what's shown yet adapt how received depending on experiences or beliefs

Oppositional position - Accept what producers are saying but disagree and read it in different way

Dominant position - That Kelley and Yorkie should get together and become a couple - something clearly set up from the start and supported by the audience

Negotiated position - Kelley should go to san Junipero after passing over or just die naturally - the audience could either agree or disagree and potentially may understand Kelley's point of view with her husband and daughter

Oppositional position -
