Story of riptide is about how women are treated in the film industry and how they are represented. Lady getting kidnapped and abused. On numerous occasions women are located of filmed in dangerous or scary situations and can also show how they try and break from freedom and how important freedom is for people who are being put in bad situations. There are some shots where it shows a woman being hypnotised and under somebody's control which may link to whole search for freedom narrative
The video tells the story in an analogical way due to the lack of direction in some of the shots and randomness of some of the footage such as 'cowboy running from themselves' where it makes the audience think why is that needed in the song or the relation to the storyline
I associate rather fast pace shots or lots of action to keep the audience interested in a typical music video, film, tv narrative. This is because there is normally a lot of action
Todorov Theory - Equilibrium
- Most narratives are based around a text and have a clear beginning middle and end
- Many narratives include some sort of disruption that leads to an attempt to resolve the problem
- Todorov adapted this basic formula into his Equilibrium Theory
Equilibrium (calm and peaceful and normal at the beginning
Disruption (something happens)
Recognition (disruption is acknowledged)
Resolution (Attempt to repair disruption)
Restoration (not same as the beginning but some normality is restored)
New Equilibrium (new normal)
One of the appeals of narrative of this nature is that it keeps the audience engaged and on their toes not knowing what's going to come next. Also with a degree of horror and attaching storyline such as a kidnapping it makes the audience watch the whole video in order to try and find out what happens
Avant Garde
Avant Garde is originally a French term, meaning in English vanguard or advance guard (the part of the army that goes forward ahead of the rest). It first appeared with reference to art in France in the first half of the nineteenth century, and is usually credited to the influential thinker Hendri de Saint-Simon, one of the forerunners of socialism. He believed in the social power of the arts and saw artists, alongside scientists and industrialists as the leaders of a new society
It is applicable to all art that pushes the boundaries of ideas and creativity, and is still used today to describe art that is radical or reflects originality of vision.
Surrealism
A 20th century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition (contrast) of images
What possible meanings you can take from this film?
That one person likes taking people captive and killing them
What are some of the most dominant signifiers in this film?
One dominant signifiers is the box that the hand gets put into, it seems to be in numerous shots and has a lot of attention on it.
What parallels can be drawn between this and riptide?
Timings and shots both change around a lot during the film and music video and has no clear chronological narrative. Lack of Todorov theory as there is no normal just disruption throughout
