26/01/23 Work

The meaning behind mainstream is to influence people who read the magazine and to match peoples interests in order to encourage them to read the newspaper that is created. This can be done through advertising certain products or a certain genre of news being covered or highlighted.

First impressions of product 1:

  • The target audience is women (common sense due to the title and the front cover)
  • Very basic - limited content or information on the front cover
  • Picture doesn't really give a lot of information on the content inside the magazine
  • Little subheadings on the bottom of the page tell the reader what's inside the magazine
  • Very stereotypical subject of the kitchen - educates women at the time they should enjoy and cherish their kitchens
  • There is also a quote from a man calling women special which will show the women what men think of them and the work they do in the house
  • The adverts at the bottom fit the ideology of the time as do housework and focus on fashion to look good for the man
The title is of serif font and looks fancy to make women feel very important and classy which they will like. The picture of the women fills the entire page to show who it is aimed for and the smile helps the reader feel more positive and to try and show what a women should look like. The font of the headline is large to stand out and create an impression on the audience. The quote on the side is placed as people will read left to right so people will read before viewing the contents at the bottom. It is placed next to the women to present that the quote is talking about the person on the front cover. The background is plain to draw more attention to the person in the cover and her body language of happy. The colour is a very feminine colour to also address who the target audience is and the content of the kitchen is associated with the time of the release of the magazine to link to women as they should do all the cooking and the cleaning. The main feature is about kitchens and the features below are lingerie and beauty which also links to a hobby/role that women of that time had to look good for men. This means the codes and conventions of the magazine is to back up ideologies of how women should act and accept responsibilities of the time period which is backed up by the front cover and features. Hair and the dress on the person shows how women should display themselves during the time period. The bit on the top right which is pushed out of view is just a bit of information that gasses up the newspaper and makes people want to buy it.

The code and conventions of the sub-genres of the magazine represent their role in society. They are listed at the bottom of the contents page of BEAUTY, COOKERY, FASHION, HOME, KNITTING which shows that they are all women things and not aimed at men. The codes and conventions of the magazine is that men are extremely underrepresented due to the magazine not being aimed at them as the sub genres are not things that men would be interested in doing.

The social and cultural ideology of the magazine is that the women have their roles and hobbies in society and they are all outlined in the contents of the magazine. The way they are expected to dress and present themselves are shown in pictures such as the front cover and their roles which contrast to men are also presented. There is also parts of the magazine where men's opinion on women are presented so when women read the magazine they have an insight to how they are viewed and how they are expected to act, look or what to do.

The target audience is made clearly to women as the contents at the bottom are female activities and the front cover shows the people its aimed at. The subtitles also talk about cooking, fashion and back to school which also represents a women's job of looking after children of the time period so a men wouldn't care about it. The target audience will be middle aged, middle class women as they would have to have these values and have them taught to them for guidance of what is expected of them from men both in how they act and how they present themselves
